Hannibal the cannibal. Interesting pun. Carnivore. I'm sure there were some of them in movies and series both before and after "Lambs". But, my first association with the word "cannibal" will always be Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
In this case, there is no doubt what kind of villain we are dealing here. From the first scene behind the glass, in a sterile white uniform, slicked back hair and icy eyes, the message is clear - STAY AWAY FROM THE GLASSSS...! Also, that emphasis on certain words so that they sound like a snake is clicking its tongue - can we talk creepy, ladies and gentlemen? All mixed up with a brilliant mind, eloquence and a clear thought pattern.
And then, the madness again. Controlled, or impulsive and instinctive? You tell me. And that's why this character keeps us on edge throughout the entire movie. That craftiness of Sir Anthony Hopkins to portray him almost like a human being. Almost. Because, just as you became aware of sympathy that's accumulating inside of your mind, blood and flesh wash over you.

That scene where Lecter is beating up police officer with a police baton, all while the most sofisticated music plays in the background, with the blood spurting all over the place, and Lecter's face that reveals cold animal pleasure...He makes you sick!
Ask yourself, how many other carnivores you know that can provoke all those impulses in your guts? Me, none.
